TikTok has committed to retaliate against social media snoops who impeded the hunt for Nicola Bulley and circulated upsetting conspiracy theories about the mother-of-two online.
Yesterday, Lancashire Police said that the 45-year-old mortgage adviser’s corpse had been discovered in the River Wyre in Lancashire.
‘Press and members of the public’ who ‘accused their dad of misconduct, misquoted and demonized friends and relatives’ were criticized by her family in a sorrowful statement they published.
This cannot happen to another family, they added, “This is simply horrible; they must be held responsible.”
Ms. Bulley disappeared on January 27 while walking her dog along the St. Michael’s on Wyre, and since then, her story has received a great deal of media interest.
Locals in the tiny Lancashire town where she vanished have blasted “ghouls” and amateur social media detectives who have flocked there to look into the matter themselves.
Videos speculating about her abduction have been all over the social media site TikTok, featuring rumors, conjecture, and conspiracy theories.
In a statement, TikTok said: “Our sympathies are with Ms Bulley’s family and friends during this trying time.” In order to track how the discussion about this case is developing, we have mobilized resources.
In response to breaches of our Community Rules, “We are taking action, including deleting material and accounts, and restricting the reach of certain content by rendering it ineligible for recommendation.”
Yesterday, after police confirmation that the corpse taken from the river was really Ms. Bulley’s, the grieving family of Ms. Bulley made a heartbreaking statement.
They declared: “Nikki was the center of our universe; she was the one who made our lives so wonderful, and nothing can ever dim that. We will never forget her.”
The ones who care about our daughters the most will provide them with the assistance they need.
“Today, our family liaison officers had to confirm our darkest suspicions.
“We will never be able to fully understand what Nikki had to go through in her last moments,” the statement goes.
“To those who sincerely helped and supported us, we thank you,” the family said.
“The St. Michael’s community’s support—from family, friends, and total strangers—has been nothing short of reassuring and heartwarming.” You are who you are, friends. I’m grateful.
“Our hearts ache deeply for those who are left without loved ones. Keep your faith alive.
Finally, Nikki, you are no longer listed as missing; you have been located, and we can finally allow you to rest.
We’ll handle it from here. We adore you, always have and always will.
About 11.36 on Sunday morning, a self-described “psychic” located Nicola’s corpse in the River Wyre in Lancashire.
Further information concerning Ms. Bulley’s disappearance was revealed by Lancashire Police this week, including the fact that she was deemed a “high-risk” missing person from the outset of the inquiry because of “particular vulnerabilities.”
She then disclosed to police that she had “major problems” with drinking as a result of her persistent difficulties with the menopause.
According to investigators, it was “essential to explain what we meant when we spoke about vulnerabilities to prevent any additional conjecture or misunderstanding” that this level of information had been disclosed, a “extraordinary action.”
TikTok “ghouls” continued to shoot horrifying video after once being barred from the Nicola Bulley search location. One such clip was of something being pulled from the riverfront on Sunday, the day Ms. Bulley’s corpse was discovered.
It was the most recent in a series of hoaxers and amateur sleuths who gathered at Saint. Michael’s on Wyre after she disappeared last month.
Although some people analyzed satellite images from their homes to look for clues, others streamed films on the case including self-proclaimed psychics and body language specialists.
Dan Duffy, a social media influencer, was penalized on February 16 for participating in the search.
On his YouTube account named Exploring with Danny, he had uploaded a video of himself being taken into custody by Lancashire Police officers.
According to the police, the 36-year-old was issued a fixed penalty notice for inciting fear or violence in violation of section 4 of the Public Order Act.
During their terrible news conference last week when they announced Ms. Bulley had “vulnerabilities,” Lancashire Police lamented social media sleuths, which encouraged further conjecture.
According to Det Supt. Smith, people performing their own searches had spread “false information, charges, and rumors” that had complicated the inquiry.
Indeed, that has really sidetracked the inquiry, she said.
I’ve been a police officer for 29 years, and I’ve never seen anything like that.
Some of it has shocked and upset the family in a terribly bad way.
We have evaluated everything that has arrived, but of course, it has distracted us a lot. Clearly, we can’t ignore anything.
