The city Department of Transportation made an error in spelling the name of baseball legend Jackie Robinson on a road sign in Queens.
The sign, located at Myrtle Avenue and Forest Park Drive, displays a picture of Robinson alongside the words “Jakie Robinson Parkway”.
Residents of the area expressed their disappointment and frustration with the mistake, calling it embarrassing, disrespectful, and stupid.
Robinson was a trailblazer in the world of baseball, being the first black player to play in Major League Baseball, breaking the sport’s decades-old color barrier.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and died 10 years later.
City Councilman Robert Holden also criticized the mistake, calling it a slap in the face to Robinson’s legacy.
He added that the DOT should have had multiple people checking the sign’s spelling.
After being notified of the error, the DOT promised to fix the sign immediately.
However, the mistake left many residents frustrated with the government and questioning how such an oversight could have occurred.
