The NYPD has a high-tech aerial surveillance system that can track criminals from the sky.
The Webcam MX-10 aerial infrared technology, used by police pilots from 1000 feet above the city, can read license plates, identify suspects on rooftops and view up to three miles.
The technology is particularly useful in a city where high-speed chases in ground vehicles can be difficult.
The pilots, who are trained for low-altitude tactical surveillance and reconnaissance missions, also have skills such as fast rope deployments, high-rise and roof-top insertions, hoist operations, and serve as air ambulance operators.
They respond to calls within a 60-mile radius of the city.
The Aviation Unit is a patrol cop’s secret weapon and focuses on terrorism and street criminals.
During national holidays and major events, the pilots scan large vessels in the harbour, train yards and waterways for suspicious activity.
The unit includes 35 pilots, a large maintenance crew and seven choppers.
