An old clip from the popular television show “South Park” has recently gone viral on social media. The clip features the show’s main character, Eric Cartman, using transgender identity politics for his own benefit. In the scene, Cartman becomes outraged with the lack of toilets in the boys’ restroom at school and decides to identify as transgender, or as he mispronounces it, “transgender,” to use the girls’ room. When confronted by female characters in the restroom, he defends his claim to be there.
Later in the episode, the school principal confronts Cartman, suggesting that he does not know what “transgender” means. Cartman responds by claiming that society sees him as a boy, but he is really a girl, and that he lives a life of torture and confusion.
He proclaims that the principal cannot force him to use the same restroom as the “cisgingers.” The episode also features a conversation among school staff about the politically-correct name for people who aren’t transgender, with Mr. Garrison warning his coworkers not to start a scandal by going against transgender ideology.
The topic of men identifying as women has become controversial in female sports, where men with more upper body strength can overwhelm their female competition. Lawyer and former Olympian Nancy Hogshead-Makar warned about the issue, saying, “There’s no training, no coach, that’s going to outrun biology.” Another clip from an older episode of “South Park” also went viral for similarly lampooning transgender ideology. The show has a long history of mocking political figures and ideologies on both sides of politics.
