It was not as it had been.
Harry Styles had a memorable night at the 65th Grammy Awards, but he was not flawless.
The 29-year-old singer, who won Best Pop Vocal Album and the coveted Album of the Year for “Harry’s House,” played his smash track “As It Was,” but the performance took an unexpected turn.
His dancers stated on social media that the stage, which resembled the music video for the song and was a spinning turntable, rotated in the opposite direction of how they had practiced.
“What you don’t know is that as soon as the curtain opened and it was time to perform, our turntable began spinning in reverse, backward, freaking out all of us on live television, and there was nothing we could do to stop it,” dancer Brandon Mathis said in an Instagram story that has since been reposted on TikTok.
The dancer said that the stage was intended to spin in the opposite direction.
“Therefore, after rehearsing this piece flawlessly for a week, as soon as it’s time to perform, it begins to go [the other] way,” Mathis added. “In real time, we must troubleshoot and attempt to perform an entire piece in reverse.” Discuss professionalism.”
Dexter Da Rocha, a dancer and choreographer, elaborated on the scenario on TikTok, detailing the entire rehearsal process.
Da Rocha said in the since-deleted TikTok video, “We rehearsed for 10 days getting down these beautiful formations and sliding off the table in a roll-off and just making this incredible, morphing, cool artistic s–t and Harry did such a good job integrating into it.”
The dancers for Harry Styles disclosed on social media that the stage rotated in the opposite direction of their rehearsals.
“We practiced the entire time with the turntable rotating counterclockwise. It was challenging and stressful to make such patterns while something was moving and to have such spatial awareness,” stated the choreographer. “At the dress rehearsal, it was beautiful and incredible. We enter the stage for the show, the performance begins, and the turntable begins to spin in the opposite direction.”
The dancers attempted to catch the technician’s attention but were unsuccessful because it was live television and they “couldn’t yell” to be heard.
“It seems simple to reverse all those patterns on the spot, without having walked in that direction. Because it is round, it pulls you in multiple directions and provides a unique form of balance. “We were accustomed to one way, but it turned out to be the opposite,” Da Rocha explained. “We were able to achieve one cool formation in time for the overhead shot by working together and doing our best, but we had to change the rest.”
With “Harry’s House,” Harry Styles won both the Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year awards.
Da Rocha claimed that Styles “did his best to walk and reverse everything while he was singing and reverse his entire duet,” but the entire performance was difficult since they were all “just trying to f—ing stay standing.”
Unfortunately, the world did not get to see the work of Yoann Bourgeois, all of our dancers, or Harry’s wonderful f—ing job, but he won Album of the Year, which is incredible, and we all have a tale to tell. Still, that was such a goddamn wonderful experience. What a f—ing wild journey,” the dancer exclaimed. “He’s so pleasant and cool and hard-working, and he made the practice process so lovely.
Da Rocha ended, “You can try to control s—t that goes wrong, you can resist it, or you can just make the best of it and work together and do your f—king best, so have a happy Monday.”
The dancers attempted to grab the technician’s attention, but failed because they were on live television and “couldn’t yell” to be heard.

Mathis also lauded Bourgeois on Instagram, writing, “To spend a week submerged in your bright mind is nothing short of remarkable. And I am so appreciative of your trust, compassion, and willingness to play and be gentle throughout it all. Even absurd technological challenges that none of us could have anticipated.”
Styles has not commented on the incident, but he likely wished the turntable would continue to spin in a single direction.
