Calls are being made for Dominic Perrottet to end Covid-19 isolation and the $11,000 penalties for breaking it.
The seven-day isolation rule will reportedly be debated in the national cabinet meeting with other premiers and the prime minister on next Wednesday, according to the premier of NSW.
He advocated for the isolation time to be cut to five days last month, but others think he should go farther and do away with it entirely, like the UK.
Despite the fact that lockdowns are no longer necessary since 97% of New South Wales inhabitants are immunised, violating self-isolation is punishable by a $11,000 fine under the state’s public health regulations.
The leader of NSW One Nation, Mark Latham, said that the antiquated regulation must be repealed.
He told Daily Mail Australia, “We need to return to normal and forget about fining individuals.”
“Covid should be handled as an influenza-like illness.”
$10,904 in Victoria and $50,000 in Western Australia is the maximum penalties for breaking Covid regulations.
On Monday, 3,426 RAT tests and 2,141 PCR tests were submitted in NSW, which reported 5,567 additional cases.
Since some people do not report their positive RAT test results to Service NSW, there are probably thousands more instances.
According to NSW Police, it is no longer kept track of how many Covid-19 penalties had been issued.
Since taking over for Gladys Berejiklian, Mr. Perrottet has been eager to abolish the Covid regulations. He said that rather than NSW acting alone, he wants other states to work together to minimise isolation.
Given our current situation, a national strategy is necessary. Compared to states going their own separate ways, it is better, he told reporters on Monday.
