It has been discovered that the guest presenter accused of making a “racist” remark at the British Curry Awards is Charlie Mullins, the owner of Pimlico Plumbers.
The TV doctor Ranj Singh criticized the businessman after he made the remark, “Why has India never won the World Cup? Due to the fact that they always construct a store on corners.
‘I was incredibly honored to be a guest at the British Curry Awards, and had a lovely evening with a lot of like-minded hard-working entrepreneurs doing good things for charity,’ Mullins said in a statement to MailOnline this afternoon. If I offended anybody with anything I said, it was not my intention, and I really regret it.
I had a terrific day, and I am aware that we raised a ton of money for worthwhile charities.
Dr. Ranj, 43, criticized the choice of comedian Hugh Dennis as the show’s presenter as well as the “all-white judging panel” and “90% white performers,” adding that he was “paraphrasing somewhat.”
Additionally, the This Morning host criticized the event’s organizers for auctioning off a piece by Winston Churchill because of his “problematic” interactions with Bengalis and other Indians.
Critics of the renowned wartime prime minister claim that the Bengal famine of 1943, which claimed up to four million lives, was brought on by his actions. Additionally, he allegedly said about Indians: “Horrible people with a beastly faith.”
Hugh Dennis, a comedian, presided over the ceremony, which former Prime Minister David Cameron branded the “Curry Oscars.” Chris Tarrant, retired player David Seaman, and Congressman Chris Grayling were also there.
Saira Khan, a former Apprentice competitor, James Cosmo, Nina Wadia, cricketer Phil Tufnell, and reality TV personalities Nadia Essex and Farah Sattaur were also in attendance.
While attending the ritzy event on Monday night at Evolution in London, Dr. Singh—who is also an NHS physician—felt obligated to express his opinions on Twitter.
He posted a little video of his table, the stage, and the other attendees during the event, writing: “It’s so amazing to be at the #BritishCurryAwards tonight… honoring the finest of Asian food!” But why have all the judges, the presenter, and even the majority of the artists up to this point been white? We can improve!
He tagged the event’s primary sponsor, Just Eat, and added the hashtag “representation counts.”
Dr. Singh stated in an open letter to the British Curry Awards that he was “not the only one who felt uncomfortable today” after the event.
I was honored and fortunate to be welcomed as a guest to the British Curry Awards tonight, he continued. First of all, I want to express my gratitude to this outstanding organization for everything it has done to support the Asian community.
“But are we really representing our community accurately when the emcee is white, the judging panel is largely white, and the onstage artists are over 90% white?” And to top it all off, we’re auctioning off a work by Winston Churchill whose connections with India (and notably Bengalis) are problematic and making a racial joke on stage?
“We are superior than this. We are a wonderful people. We have accomplished a lot and still have a lot to contribute. Together, let’s improve things.
I must be quiet, he stated in the caption. Greetings, @BritCurryAwards Please let’s discuss this. Since I am aware of your sincere efforts and good intentions, I won’t chastise you. And you’ve contributed much to charity. However, we are superior to this.
‘I am extremely proud of my background, my community, and those who have gone before me to enable me to do what I do,’ the former Strictly Come Dancing participant said in a subsequent post. I can’t remain quiet on issues that are important because of this.
We are not impervious to criticism (and that includes me). However, we are eager to improve.
In reference to the “racist joke,” he wrote: “Paraphrased differently, but this is a joke made on stage at the @BritCurryAwards tonight by a white person: “Why has India never won the World Cup? Due to the fact that they always construct a store on corners.
I apologize, but how is this OK? he questioned.
In a video message for the event, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his support for the curry business.
