Saturday, at the Creative Arts ceremony, the late actor Chadwick Boseman was awarded a posthumous Emmy for outstanding character voice-over performance.

The “Black Panther” and “42” actor died of colon cancer in August of 2020. He was 43.

In the animated series “What If…?” from Disney+ and Marvel Studios, Boseman provided the voice of Star-Lord T’Challa, a variation on the renowned Black Panther character he portrayed in live-action films.

The episode “What If… T’Challa Became a Star Lord?” earned Boseman his first Emmy win and nomination. Taylor Simone Ledward, Boseman’s wife, collected the medal on his behalf.

“And what a beautifully aligned moment it really is that one of the last things he would work on would not only be revisiting a character that was so important to him, his career, and the world, but also that it be an exploration of something new, diving into a new potential future,” Ledward said in her acceptance speech. “You cannot comprehend your mission until you are willing to question ‘What if?’ and ‘What if the world is conspiring in my favor, and what if it’s me?’”

Boseman’s final role was in “What If…?” by Marvel.

Marvel Studios

The “What If…” series examines alternate histories for Marvel’s most iconic characters. Each episode examines what would have transpired if significant events in the comics had occurred differently for a different character. This is the first animated series produced by Marvel, created by head writer A.C. Bradley and directed by Bryan Andrews. The launch of the anthology series was in August 2021.

Boseman was nominated for best actor at the Academy Awards for his performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” after his death. In 2021, he earned the best actor prize for the film posthumously at the SAG Awards, Golden Globes, and Critics’ Choice Awards.

“Black Panther” was a cultural sensation in 2018. It was the first superhero film to be nominated for best picture at the 2019 Academy Awards. It was also the first Marvel film to star a Black superhero.

The Black Panther anthology will continue with the release of Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” sequel. Kirsten Acuna of Insider said that the beloved figure T’Challa will not be remade after Boseman’s passing.

“His portrayal of T’Challa [and] the Black Panther is legendary and surpasses all previous versions of the character in any Marvel medium. We will not recast the character for this reason “Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, said in a statement to Insider.

On November 11, the much anticipated sequel will be released in theaters.
