This next weekend, the DStv Diski Challenge will continue with the Orlando Pirates Reserves traveling to Dobsonville Stadium to face Soweto rivals Swallows on Sunday afternoon.
It is the Buccaneers’ second Derby in the first four weeks of the new season, following a matchup against Kaizer Chiefs in the season opener.
Form Guide
They will face a different opponent this time, a Swallows team riding high after kicking off the season with a narrow victory over SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium last Sunday.
The triumph moved the Birds up to 12th place in the standings, giving them four points after one win, one tie, and one loss in three matches.
The Bucs Reserves have a similar record to the Swallows in the early parts of the season and are two spots ahead of them after scoring two more goals.
This follows a weekend of contrasting fortunes for Soweto’s oldest rivals, during which Pirates were defeated 2-0 by Cape Town City at Atteridgeville.
They began the season with a 3-2 victory over Chiefs away from home, followed by a goalless draw against the defending champions Stellenbosch at home.
The soldiers of Joseph Makhanya, who are now in new territory in the bottom half of the league, will attempt to earn all three available points in the hopes of moving as high as second place, depending on the weekend’s other results.
Head-to-Head
Pirates will have fond memories of Dobsonville due to their 5-1 rout of their rivals earlier in the season.
In their final match of the 2021/22 season, the Bucs Reserves defeated the Birds 2-0 in Tsukanese to clinch a league double over them.
Their exploits tilted the head-to-head results in their favor, as they presently have two wins to Swallows’ one in their three previous meetings at this level.
A total of 13 goals have been scored in this fledgling rivalry, with Pirates leading by a considerable margin with nine goals.
