After a photographer was struck by a tree branch while covering the team’s promotion parade, a football player prevented her from falling from the top of a double-decker bus.
Quick-thinking Arnau Martinez, a defender for Girona, reacted quickly when he noticed the photographer dangling from a safety barrier by her legs.
A tree branch had knocked the photographer, Nuri Margui, off the upper floor of the bus.
But the 19-year-old star snatched her and pulled her back aboard the car as she held on for dear life.
There, Martinez was more than just the hero. Additionally, on Saturday he scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute to elevate Girona to the top division of Spanish football.
The Catalan team faced Tenerife in the play-off final on June 19 at their home field after a scoreless draw in the first leg in Girona.
Despite Tenerife having the home advantage for the pivotal game, Girona won 1-3, with Martinez scoring the third goal to guarantee promotion to the top tier in the 80th minute.
On June 21, Pau Villafane Duran posted the video to Twitter, where it quickly gained traction and received more than 200,000 views.
“Arnau Martinez rescue Nuri Margui,” the Girona supporter yelled.
Martinez, a Catalan native from Premia de Dalt, started his professional football career with a local team before moving on to Barcelona’s renowned La Masia at the age of seven.
Before going to Hospitalet and departing for Girona two years later, he played for the Catalan giants for six years. He made his first team debut in 2020 and has since participated in 62 games for the squad, scoring three goals and dishing out eight assists.
