The former Emir of Kano, Mohammad Sanusi, had a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.

The purpose of the meeting, as previously reported, was for Sanusi to provide President Tinubu with updates regarding his discussions with the leaders of the military coup in Niger.

After the meeting, Sanusi addressed the press and shared that he visited the Presidential Villa to brief President Tinubu about his engagements with the leaders of the military junta that had orchestrated the overthrow of the democratically elected government in Niger.

He stated, “I came to brief him on the details of my discussions with leaders of Niger.

We’ll continue to do our best to bring the two parties together to improve understanding.

This is the time for public diplomacy, it’s not a matter that we leave to governments.

All Nigerians, all Nigeriens need to be involved to find a solution that works for Africa, a solution that works for Niger, that works for Nigeria, and a solution that works for humanity.”

Responding to inquiries about whether he took the initiative on his own accord or was part of a government delegation, Sanusi clarified, “No, I was not sent by the government.

Government officials were aware I was going, but it was my personal initiative, using my personal contacts to get there, and I will continue to do my best.

It is my duty as a leader to do that.”

Sanusi also confirmed that he was warmly received by the military junta leaders in Niger during his visit.

A Diplomatic Role and Personal Initiative

The meeting between former Emir Mohammad Sanusi and President Bola Tinubu holds significance, especially considering Sanusi’s engagement with the leaders of the military coup in Niger.

Sanusi’s initiative to personally engage in diplomatic efforts indicates his commitment to fostering understanding and solutions between parties involved.

His emphasis on public diplomacy and the need for collective involvement highlights his belief in a comprehensive approach to addressing regional challenges.

Sanusi’s assertion that he undertook this initiative on his own, independent of direct government involvement, underscores his dedication as a leader to take proactive steps in matters of regional importance.

This approach not only reflects his commitment to leadership but also his belief in using personal connections and influence to contribute to diplomatic efforts.

The warm reception Sanusi received from the military junta leaders could signify the importance they accorded to his visit and insights.

It remains to be seen how this personal initiative and diplomatic engagement will contribute to the broader discourse surrounding the recent political developments in Niger and the region as a whole.
