Seattle City SpotLight: Mendy Droke, State Government Relations

The Basics:
How long have you been at City Light? Since 2018
Division: Government and Legislative Affairs
Tell us about your role: I’m the state lobbyist for Seattle City Light. During the annual legislative session, I’m in Olympia (in non-COVID times), where I meet with legislators, testify on legislation, and work with other utilities to move our legislative priorities forward.
We had some big wins last session – the passage of Clean Fuels Standards and the Climate Commitment Act. This session we’re trying to secure funding for customer arrearages.
I love the job because it’s very interactive and strategic. I go from working on the same side as other utilities on certain issues but not on others.
The most important thing is to be straightforward, reliable, and professional.
Background
Hometown: El Sobrante, Calif.; however, I’ve lived almost half my life in Washington.
Alma Mater: California State University, Chico
Area of study: Public Relations and Psychology
Tell us about your family: I’ve been married for 30 years. We have a 27-year-old son (who got engaged last year) in Denver and a 25-year-old daughter in Chicago. I’m hoping they both move back to the Northwest soon.
Just for Fun
Which City Light value do you align most with and why? Customer Service. I advocate for legislation that benefits our customers, and I take that responsibility very seriously.
Legislation like Clean Fuels Standards will increase transportation electrification, which helps our customers.
What’s your favorite book and why? “To Kill a Mockingbird.” When I read it in high school, it introduced me to the concept of empathy and “walking around in someone else’s shoes.”
What is something most people don’t know about you? I’m studying to get a Level 2 Certification from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust.
What is your favorite sweet or savory treat? See’s Candies
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? Women have many phases in their lives, so enjoy each one.
