Two more learners have lost their lives in the Vyfhoek truck disaster, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven, the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management said in a statement on Friday, 19 August 2022
The truck driver was uninjured in the accident. The provincial police are reportedly investigating a case of culpable homicide.
According to the education department of the province government, the tragedy took place on Thursday afternoon at 1:00PM.
On Thursday, the accident that occurred close to the N12 Highway resulted in the deaths of five children, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. The death toll from the incident now stands at seven with the demise of another two students.
It is reported that the driver of a small truck that was traveling along the N12 from Potchefstroom to Johannesburg lost control of the vehicle when one of the front tires of the vehicle ruptured.
Four students at Vyfhoek Primary School were killed instantaneously when a truck drove through the school’s perimeter gate. According to the education department, the fifth student passed away while being treated by paramedics at the site as she was riding in the ambulance.
According to Vyfhoek Primary School, the students were waiting to be picked up by their scholar transport.
