Shehu Sani Comes to the Defense of Kashim Shettima’s Double Nomination, Citing Precedents

Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has come to the defense of Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima, stating that Shettima committed no offense by purchasing a senatorial form for the 2023 general election.

It has been reported that Shettima acquired an expression of interest and nomination forms to run for the Senate prior to being chosen as the vice-presidential candidate by President-elect Bola Tinubu.

Criticism has emerged regarding Shettima’s alleged double nomination, with critics even considering taking the matter to the Supreme Court.

In response, Sani released a statement asserting that Shettima had done nothing wrong.

He pointed out that Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan had also contested the presidential election while concurrently seeking re-election to represent Yobe North Senatorial District, which he successfully won.

Sani further mentioned the example of former Akwa Ibom state governor Godswill Akpabio, who similarly ran for the presidency alongside seeking another office.

Sani expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would not rule against Shettima’s double nomination, highlighting the principle that what was acceptable for Lawan and Akpabio should also apply to Shettima.
