Sione Veikoso, a BYU football player, was killed in a construction accident in Hawaii

BYU offensive lineman Sione Veikoso died in a construction accident in Hawaii at the age of 22.

BYU’s football team said, “On behalf of the entire BYU Football family, our thoughts and prayers are with Sione’s family and friends during this terribly difficult time.” Rest in Peace, Sione Godspeed until our next meeting!”

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake added, “We are profoundly saddened by the unfortunate passing of one of our brothers, Sione Veikoso. His death is devastating to all of us. We give his family our sincere condolences and prayers as we participate in their sorrow. Our affection for you is eternal, Sione!”

According to KITV, an ABC affiliate in Hawaii, Veikoso was working on a 15-foot retaining wall as part of a construction crew. According to the story, upon arrival, firefighters discovered numerous people stuck under the wall. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, two more males were treated for their injuries and are in serious but stable condition.

The cause of the wall’s fall remains unknown.

Veikoso appeared in one game for BYU as a redshirt freshman this season after transferring from Arizona State.

According to BYU’s memorial to Veikoso, after graduating from high school in Hawaii, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil.

“He was a kind-hearted giant who cherished his family. The Star-Advertiser was told by Veikoso’s cousin, Joshua Kava, that he was dependable and caring.
