Over the weekend, a nine-year-old kid was transported to the hospital after he began sweating and vomiting. The vomiting became more severe, and the infant died as a result.
He had been poisoned, according to an autopsy.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Free State, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, said the nine-year-old was at home with his family in Phase 3 Mangaung when he broke out in a sweat and began vomiting.
“It was on Saturday, 5 February 2022 at about 20:00 when the victim was taken to hospital after an excessive vomiting,” said the police spokesperson.
The nine-year-old died shortly after his arrival at the hospital despite the best efforts of the medical staff.
The family told the police how the boy was overcome with the sudden sickness and an inquest docket was opened by detectives from Kopanong police station.
An autopsy was conducted and it allegedly confirmed that the boy had died due to poisoning.
According to the police report, the detectives put “pieces of information together” until all the evidence pointed in the direction of a single suspect – the boyfriend of the deceased’s mother.
Kareli said the 32-year-old suspect was tracked down and arrested. He is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
