Stephen Goepfert, President Joe Biden’s “bodyman,” is scheduled to depart the White House at the end of the week.
Goepfert will leave the West Wing for a post at the Transportation Department, according to a report from CNN on Tuesday.
Goepfert has worked for Biden since his 2020 campaign and previously served in the Obama White House. He was the first out homosexual man to occupy the position of personal adviser to a president.
Goepfert, the president’s “bodyman,” is often the first and final member of staff Biden sees each day.
While he isn’t entirely a public figure, he is often seen on camera delivering the president a note or laying statements on the stage before Biden speaks.
In a statement to CNN, the president said, “Stephen Goepfert has been at my side throughout the campaign to the White House.”
The president said, “He’s been a trusted and devoted confidant who everyone leans on and who always delivers in occasions large, small, and spectacular.”
Stephen will continue to serve the American people in his new position in the Biden-Harris administration as he pursues a career in public service, said Biden. “Jill and I will miss Stephen, but we’re glad that he will do so,” the vice president said.
