No Formal Investigation for Suella Braverman’s Request
Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, will not be subjected to an investigation regarding her inquiry about attending a private speed awareness course.
However, her handling of the situation has faced criticism from Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
Prime Minister’s Decision and Acknowledgment of Perception
Following consultation with his ethics adviser, the Prime Minister decided against initiating a formal investigation, stating that the matters at hand do not violate the ministerial code.
However, he did address the issue in a letter to Mrs. Braverman, expressing that a more appropriate course of action could have been taken to avoid creating a perception of impropriety.
Accusations of Breaching the Code and Acceptance of Penalty
Mrs. Braverman faced allegations of breaching the code by involving taxpayer-funded civil servants in a private matter.
She later accepted a fine and penalty points on her driving license for the speeding offense.
Braverman’s Explanation and Regret
In a letter to Chancellor Sunak, the Home Secretary explained that her intention was to explore the possibility of customized arrangements considering her role as a security-protected minister.
She clarified that her aim was not to evade sanction, although she understands how some people may have interpreted it as such.
Acknowledging the crucial importance of integrity in public life, she expressed deep regret for any perception her actions may have caused and apologized for the resulting distraction.
