In a 3-1 victory against Royal AM on Tuesday night at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Tshwane, SuperSport United moved up to third position in the DStv Premiership standings.
Due to their win, Matsatsantsa are now tied for second position on the log with Orlando Pirates and are just five points behind Mamelodi Sundowns in first place.
In the 59th minute, Thamsanqa Gabuza gave the home team a justifiable lead by heading in from the far post.
The 36-year-old towering center striker displayed his skill as he hid behind unaware Royal AM defenders and emerged to direct newcomer Patrick Masangwayi’s exquisite cross past goalkeeper Patrick Nyame.
Being down a goal appeared to jolt the visitors into action, and their efforts in the second half were rewarded when substitute Mfundo Thikazi scored his third goal of the year and tied the game in the 76th minute.
Five minutes later, Grant Margeman’s miraculous goal gave Matsatsantsa the lead again. The midfield dynamo had been set up beyond the box by a beautiful cross before he hammered an empathic effort past a helpless Nyame.
When he all but clinched the victory in the 93rd minute, Bradley Grobler put the icing on the cake after Nyame had mishandled the first shot.
The Royal AM team arrived in Matsatsantsa looking out of sorts and without co-coach Khabo Zondo, who is said to be leaving the club.
In terms of accuracy and decision-making, Matsatsantsa has made significant progress in recent weeks.
Given their recent success, which includes three victories in their past five games and six goals, it came as a surprise that both teams were tied at the half. However, the home team earned all three points thanks to a strong and efficient second half.
