Swimming to be the first sport to enable transgender athletes compete at the highest level

FINA, the world governing organization, will create a “open category” in which transgender athletes will compete in their own class.

The news was revealed by Husain Al-Musallam, head of the regulatory organization FINA, on Sunday afternoon.

‘I don’t want any athlete to be told they can’t compete at the greatest level,’ Al-Musallam said during his organization’s annual convention.

‘I will set up a working group to set up an open category at our meets. We will be the first federation to do that.’
