Tan France on sharing style ideas and baby playdates with Gigi Hadid

Five years after his meteoric rise to fame as “Queer Eye’s” resident fashion expert, Tan France is busier than ever.

In addition to recently becoming a father to 1-year-old son Ismail, whom he and husband Rob France welcomed via surrogate in 2021, the Fab Fiver designs his own outerwear label (the genderless Was Him), is set to co-host Season 2 of “Next in Fashion” alongside Gigi Hadid, and was just named by Express as the new lead stylist for the retailer’s Express Styling Community.

“I’ve been employed by Express for around three years… The partnership has been amazing, and it’s only getting stronger,” France, 39, tells Page Six Style, adding that he frequently dresses himself and the “Queer Eye” protagonists in the brand’s outfits.

“I’ve never found a suit from any other manufacturer that fits me perfectly without adjustments. Their suits are great; each season they use different colors and fabrics, as well as different shapes, but they’ve nailed the fit for me virtually every time.”

And achieving the appropriate fit is essential for avoiding one of the most common fashion faux pas in France: “people not understanding their proportions.”

“If you wear pants with a high waist, you will appear taller. If you wear really low-rise pants, your legs will appear petite. “Wearing a slightly cropped top will make your torso appear shorter and your legs appear longer,” he says, providing a few examples.

“It’s just really [about] understanding what the proportions of clothes do to the proportions of your body.”

Obviously, a select few individuals can carry off whatever trend or silhouette they wish, such as Hadid, 27, France’s supermodel BFF and new “Next in Fashion” co-host.

“She’s the ultimate professional. She will always accomplish her goals. She is a kind person. “And I’m not just saying that to blow smoke up her arse,” France said about the model. “The only diva trait, which is not a diva trait, is that she takes longer than I do to apply hair and makeup.”

Hadid’s even taught France a thing or two about taking fashion risks.

“I’ve always desired to wear attire that people enjoy. But I immediately learnt from Gigi many years ago: Who cares if nobody likes it? Always, somebody has an opinion. Whether they like it or dislike it, at least they’re considering it!” he says.

In addition to exchanging style advice, the two can also share parenting tips; Hadid and her then-boyfriend Zayn Malik welcomed their daughter Khai in 2020.

France informs us that the two infants have not yet met, as he and Hadid reside on opposite coasts and Ismail is the “worst flier”; however, they are “planning on something this year.”

“I’m so thrilled!” he exclaims. “I am certain he will love her. [Khai’s] part Pakistani, my son’s part Pakistani, they’re both part white … she’s the only kid he will understand at this point!”
