In a thrilling turn of events, Team GB snagged their first medal of the Olympics, thanks to a dramatic slip-up from an Australian diving duo.
On July 27, 2024, Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen clinched bronze in the women’s 3m synchronized diving with a score of 302.28.
It seemed like their chance at a medal was slipping away as Australia needed just 58.68 points to surpass them going into the final round.
However, Annabel Smith’s misstep led to the Australians scoring only 48.60, allowing Harper and Mew Jensen to secure Team GB’s first medal of the Games.
Historic Achievement for Team GB
This bronze medal marks a significant achievement for the Brits, as it’s their first medal in women’s diving in 64 years. Additionally, it’s the first time since 2004 that Team GB has earned a medal on the very first day following the opening ceremony.
Despite a challenging third round that saw them drop to sixth place with a score of 63.90, Harper and Mew Jensen managed to bounce back.
Their impressive score of 71.10 in the next dive propelled them back into fourth place before the final results were announced.
Top Performances and Tom Daley’s Relaxing Morning
China’s Yani Chang and Yiwen Chen dominated the competition, securing gold with a flawless performance across all five rounds.
The silver medal went to the USA’s Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook.
Meanwhile, Tom Daley was seen knitting earlier in the day as he watched his fellow divers compete. With his own Olympic campaign set to begin in just two days, Daley took some time to relax.
