After Birchwood resident Brianna Ghey, 16, died from stabbing, Cheshire Police detectives have opened a murder investigation. Yesterday around 3:13 p.m., members of the public discovered Brianna’s body on a trail in Linear Park in Culcheth, Warrington. Brianna was confirmed dead at the scene.
The teen was allegedly the subject of a “targeted attack,” according to investigators. Since Brianna’s body was discovered nearby in a park, police have issued a call to talk with two people who were spotted there and are thought to be in their late teens or early 20s.
In order to determine the cause of death, a Home Office post-mortem investigation determined that Brianna had several stab wounds.
The girl’s relatives were informed yesterday, and forensic investigators are still investigating the scene. As detectives try to determine what caused her death, a crime scene has been set up.
“This is a truly awful attack on a 16-year-old girl, who sadly lost her very short life,” Detective Chief Supt. Mike Evans said. Any information that will point us in the direction of the person who hurt Brianna is welcome.
We particularly want to talk to a white man and a white woman, both in their late teens or early twenties, both with dark curly hair, who were spotted near the area where Brianna’s body was discovered.
The woman had a striking red or purple black checked blanket-style coat with a long flowing skirt, dress, or pair of pants. The man was dressed in a longish, dark hooded cloak.
“We also want to talk to anyone who was in the park yesterday from about 1:30 until 4:00 or anyone who may have seen Brianna in the hours before she passed away.” We would like to request that local residents and businesses review any CCTV or dashcam footage for anything that might help our inquiry.
“I would like to reassure the neighborhood that we are making every effort to identify those responsible for Brianna’s killing and that the investigation is being backed up by more officers in and around Culcheth. Additionally, police are helping Brianna’s family during this extremely difficult time.
According to Warrington Worldwide, locals reported seeing a lot of emergency personnel in the vicinity, including a helicopter and armed officers.
Charlotte Nichols, a Warrington North MP, has pleaded with anyone with information to come forward.
I met with the Warrington Police Borough Commander tonight regarding the awful death, the local MP wrote on Facebook.
Please come forward even if you believe it to be nothing; let the police make that determination. If you were in the vicinity and have dashcam film.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased,” she continued. “I will continue to work with and support our neighborhood police in any way I can as they gather all the information necessary to make an informed decision.”
Anyone with information is urged to get in touch with the police by calling 101 or via the IML 1476832 tip line on the Cheshire Constabulary website.
Additionally, information can be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
