According to reports, a prisoner attacked 53-year-old Darren Osborne with a homemade knife, causing significant injuries. This is the third attack that Osborne has suffered since being incarcerated for his role in a June 2017 incident in which he drove a vehicle into a crowd of people outside a mosque in North London, killing one and injuring 12 others.
Osborne was sentenced to a minimum of 43 years in prison for this horrific act.
The attack on Osborne is being described as a “revenge” attack, possibly due to his targeting of Muslims in the 2017 incident. The source from HMP Frankland in County Durham said that Osborne had been marked by Muslim gangs in the prison, which put him at risk of attack. The attacker reportedly cut Osborne from forehead to chin and attempted to gouge out his eye and strangle him.
Guards were able to intervene before the injuries became even more severe. Osborne required stitches but did not spend long in the hospital this time.
This recent attack is being investigated by the police, while Osborne is being isolated for his own safety. The prison service has confirmed the incident as a “lag-on-lag” attack resulting in minor injuries.
