According to Cormac Keenan, TikTok’s Head of Trust and Safety, the company consulted academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital when determining the appropriate length for the time restriction. In addition to the time limit, TikTok will prompt teenagers to set a daily screen time limit if they opt out of the 60-minute default and spend more than 100 minutes on the app in a day.
TikTok’s new modifications come in response to a spate of dangerous online “challenges” circulating on the app, including the “tranquilizer challenge” and “choking challenge,” which have led to overdoses and deaths among young people. TikTok is facing wrongful death lawsuits in the US after two girls fatally hanged themselves following exposure to such content on the app. TikTok has denied responsibility for these incidents, but the app is encouraging users to flag any dangerous behavior
