After another appalling performance by official Antonio Mateu Lahoz in the European Conference League, an enraged Trabzonspor supporter assaulted his laptop.
Trabzonspor of Turkey was eliminated from the European tournament after falling to FC Basel 2-0 (on the road, 2-1). And a big portion of the credit goes to the contentious Lahoz.
The Spanish official, who will resign at the conclusion of the current campaign after receiving harsh criticism for his bad judgment in recent months, went full Lahoz by dominating the show.
He disallowed two away goals, one scored in extra time. The 45-year-old also missed Basel’s obvious red card and a penalty that should have been given to Trabzonspor.
Additionally, it became too much for one Turkish supporter, who became famous on Twitter for lashing out at the official. The guy, who was viewing the game from home, gave Lahoz a clear indication of his displeasure with his performance by violently striking the referee on his own Dell laptop screen.
Lahoz has angered football supporters numerous times, and the laptop miraculously withstood the entire power of his beating without exploding.
He received a lot of flak for how he handled the December World Cup quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands. Lahoz lost control of the game and issued 18 yellow and two red cards.
He made headlines for being a notorious “fanboy” of Lionel Messi by declining to send the master off despite an obvious mistake, apparently just because Messi was Messi. And after receiving criticism from players on both teams, he backed it up by issuing another 15 yellow cards in the Catalan Derby later that month, which resulted in his suspension from the ensuing La Liga games.
According to rumours in January that Lahoz would be putting up his whistle, it appears that the reaction has forced him into early retirement. And his choice is sure to be welcomed by admirers around the globe.
