Isla Bryson, a transgender woman who caused a political uproar when she was held in a women’s prison, was sentenced to eight years in prison on Tuesday for two sexual assaults committed while still presenting as a man.
Bryson, who was initially charged in 2019 as Adam Graham, was sentenced for the two rapes, which occurred in 2016 and 2019. Last month, the Edinburgh High Court convicted her of both crimes, with one of the victims testifying how Bryson raped her with “her penis.”
The judge sentenced Bryson to eight years in prison and an additional three years on the UK equivalent of parole. The judge noted how Bryson refused to accept responsibility for her crimes, stating that she saw herself as the victim in the situation.
Bryson was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, and the judge stated that she presented a significant risk to any woman with whom she formed a relationship.
Bryson’s attorney, Edward Targowski, criticized the trial’s handling of her gender reassignment, calling it “ill-judged, ill-informed, and ignorant.”
Despite only recently transitioning, Bryson had reportedly wanted to transition from the age of four and had been on a waiting list for years. However, both Bryson’s mother and estranged wife claimed they were unaware of her gender identity.
Bryson’s case sparked outrage over Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s law that allowed Scottish citizens to legally change their gender without the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
The law was criticized by many, including “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, who accused Sturgeon of being a “destroyer of women’s rights.”
