Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao responded to former President Trump’s racist accusations against her by asserting that his assaults show “much more about him than about Asian Americans.”
Chao, 69, who the previous president frequently referred to as “Coco Chow,” voiced a rare condemnation of the former president on Tuesday.
Chao, who was born in Taiwan, said in a statement to Politico, “When I was young, some people intentionally misspelled or mispronounced my name.” “Asian Americans have labored tirelessly to alter this experience for future generations.
She continued, “He does not appear to comprehend this, which says far more about him than it does about Asian Americans.”
The letter follows Trump’s use of the racial slur against Chao on Monday, when he accused her and her husband, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, of having ties to President Biden’s mishandling of sensitive data.
Does Coco Chow have anything to do with the shipment and storage of Joe Biden’s classified documents in Chinatown? Trump published to Truth Social. Her husband, the Old Broken Crow, is extremely connected to Biden, the Democrats, and China.
Chao served as Transportation Secretary under Trump until the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, following which she resigned.
Chao arrived to the United States with her family at the age of eight and became a naturalized citizen at the age of nineteen.
Long ago, the former president made derogatory remarks about Chao, frequently referring to her as “Chow Chow” or Mitch McConnell’s “China-loving wife.”
Chao served as transportation secretary for all four years of Trump’s presidency, resigning after an attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 by an angry and destructive crowd of his supporters.
She stated in her resignation letter that the attack “deeply troubled me in a manner I simply cannot ignore.”
Chao begged the media late last month not to repeat remarks made regularly about her by her former boss.
Chao has rarely commented on the former president’s repeated criticisms about her, but last month she encouraged the media not to repeat them.
She said, “If it were the n-word or any other word, the media would not repeat it.” “However, the media repeatedly repeats his racial taunt. Therefore, he is trying to provoke us. I don’t make it a point to respond to any of his outlandish statements.
Trump spokeswoman Steven Cheung told Politico that the previous president’s criticism of Chao was not based on race, but rather on her family’s potential financial issues.
Cheung stated, “People should stop feigning outrage and engaging in controversies that only exist in their heads.” Her family’s profoundly disturbing ties to Communist China, which have endangered American economic and national security, are the true source of concern.
A report by the inspector general found no infractions of ethics affecting her family’s shipping business while she was in government.
