Tsivoglou is happy to appear in the news every Melbourne Cup

Karly Tsivoglou, also known as “Fairy Floss Girl,” rose to fame in Australia in 2016 when photos of her snacking on fairy floss at Melbourne’s Oaks Day went viral. The then-19-year-old became an internet sensation overnight, with KIIS FM’s Kyle Sandilands proclaiming her to be “hotter” than Selena Gomez. However, Tsivoglou’s fortunes have worsened, as she recently appeared in court on theft charges.

On Wednesday, Tsivoglou, now 24, appeared in the Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court for failing to comply with a good behaviour bond she received for a series of dishonesty matters. The court heard that Tsivoglou had been charged with one count of handling stolen goods, five counts of obtaining property by deception, and one charge of theft, which occurred in March 2021 during one of Melbourne’s longest Covid-19 lockdowns.

Tsivoglou admitted the crimes in January last year through the court’s diversion program, which is often given to first-time offenders to avoid impacting their lives in the future. Under the diversion plan, she did not need to plead guilty to the charges but made admissions. She was released on a 12-month bond because she apologised to the court by January this year.

However, Tsivoglou was charged by the police for failing to provide the court with that apology, resulting in her being hauled before the court again for breaching the order. The breach meant that Magistrate Steven Raleigh had to sentence Tsivoglou again over her initial crimes. Her lawyer told Mr Raleigh that Tsivoglou had fallen on tough times since her parents split and that she had unstable housing arrangements. The court heard that Tsivoglou claimed she did not receive the court correspondence in the mail and had promptly provided the letter of apology upon learning of the breach.

Magistrate Raleigh discharged her original diversion, allowing Tsivoglou to walk free without a blemish on her record, stating that she had already been punished enough. Tsivoglou, dressed in a long brown puffer coat, said nothing as she left the court and drove away in a white BMW.

Tsivoglou said she was happy to appear in the news every Melbourne Cup. She and her friend Alice Woodfall had a few glasses of champagne, put a few bets, and enjoyed the sun at the races, unaware of her internet stardom until the next morning. From then on, Tsivoglou regularly shared photos of nights out and poolside holidays on her social media. However, her online presence has taken a turn in recent years, with the new mum focusing on her little boy.

Almost every year at Melbourne Cup time, Sandilands brings up Tsivoglou’s memorable pictures, with the Sydney radio host saying in a 2020 segment that “she looks amazing, she’s got cotton candy hanging out of her mouth… it’s all happening.” Despite her recent legal troubles, Tsivoglou’s fame as “Fairy Floss Girl” lives on.
