Two supermarket coworkers, Tyesha Trice and Dylan Mitchell hit the jackpot when they decided to split two scratch-off tickets during their lunch break.
The Kentucky Lottery announced on Tuesday that the duo, who are both cashiers at a Louisville Valu Mart, won $50,000.
Trice and Mitchell bought the tickets without any expectations, simply “messing around and deciding to play,” according to Trice.
Their luck started when they won $100 off a $30 ticket, which prompted them to try their luck again and buy a $50 500X ticket.
The momentum continued to build when they found that they hit a win on every spot on the ticket, which resulted in a total winning of $50,000.
They cashed in their winnings the next day, which was Mitchell’s birthday.
After taxes, each of them took home $17,875. Mitchell said that he plans to use his birthday winnings to buy himself a car and find housing, while Trice wants to use her share for rent and savings.
Their employer, Valu Mart, was also awarded $500 for selling the winning ticket. Mitchell said that he will never forget his birthday, describing it as “definitely a birthday to remember.”
