The UK Prime Minister has not dismissed the theory that the Covid-19 pandemic may have been caused by the virus leaking from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson said the UK government wants a “robust, transparent and science-led review” and believes that all possibilities should remain on the table until it is completed.
Whitehall sources told The Telegraph that the ministers would support the theory if evidence is provided by the World Health Organisation.
The former UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, was obliged to remove anything suggesting that the virus could have originated from a Wuhan laboratory from his book, The Pandemic Diaries.
The book’s changes were made after Mr. Hancock submitted the manuscript to the Cabinet Office for review last year, a process that all former ministers must follow.
Tens of thousands of Mr. Hancock’s messages have been obtained by The Telegraph, revealing that he originally wanted to say that the Chinese government’s official version of events should be treated with “considerable scepticism”.
However, the Cabinet Office expressed concern that it could be used against the UK by the Russians, who had previously claimed that the novichok nerve agent used in the Salisbury poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal originated at the Ministry of Defence’s research laboratories at Porton Down.
Mr. Hancock also compared the Wuhan Institute of Virology to Porton Down, which is damaging to national security, according to the Cabinet Office.
The UK government would not comment on the leak or private discussions, while Mr. Hancock’s spokesperson stated that he would not comment on national security matters.
