On Manhattan’s Upper East Side, terrifying video captures the moment when bold robbers forced an SUV onto the pavement and took $20,000 in cash from the driver at gunpoint. This peculiar crime has left police looking for the culprits, who are still at large.
Around 4:40 p.m., two automobiles came barreling down Second Avenue between 91 and 92 Streets against traffic in what seemed to be a high-speed pursuit. The dramatic spectacle startled onlookers.
In the witness-recorded footage, the victim’s silver Toyota Rav-4 is seen travelling down the street at a fast rate of speed before being passed by the attackers’ black Mercedes-Benz, which bangs into the SUV.
The suspects keep stepping on the throttle, speeding up and ramming the Toyota, spinning it out while the driver keeps trying to flee.
Bystanders who had gathered to watch the incident were forced to evacuate and leap out of the way as the Mercedes driver stepped on the pedal once again and pushed the other vehicle onto the sidewalk.
The Mercedes pursues the Toyota and smashes it again, this time causing it to spin 180 degrees and come to a halt, as shown in the video. The two cars then proceed off the curb and into the adjacent bus lane.
Then, a guy with a pistol steps out of the Mercedes’ passenger side, walks over to the other car, and is seen threatening the driver by hammering on the window with the weapon. Police think the driver recognised the perpetrators.
At that point, according to authorities, the robber allegedly stole a bundle of cash worth $20,000 before reentering the Mercedes and speeding away. The event did not result in any injuries, and as of Sunday morning, the culprits were still at large.
“He has a gun!” The video, which has been extensively circulated on social media after the heinous daylight assault, can be heard one spectator screaming, “He’s got a gun!”
The armed thieves abandoned the Mercedes just a few streets away, according to NYPD sources. No injuries were mentioned in the reports.
