Maggie Murdaugh’s friends have spoken out for the first time following the conviction of her husband, Alex, for her murder.
They described her as a devoted wife and mother to their two sons, one of whom died alongside her.
Maggie’s body was found on June 7, 2021, at the family property in South Carolina, and Alex was convicted on March 2 of her murder, as well as that of their youngest son, Paul, 22.
In addition to this tragic case, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise funds for exhuming the body of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student who died under mysterious circumstances in 2015.
The death was initially ruled a hit-and-run, but Smith’s family believes he was murdered.
Buster Murdaugh, Alex and Maggie’s eldest son, was long believed to be connected to Smith’s death, but he was never questioned.
The fundraising campaign exceeded its target of $15,000, with $40,000 raised, and the family hopes for a new and unbiased investigation.
Maggie’s friends spoke about her memories, with Shellie West describing her as “fun” and “witty” and Caroline Price highlighting her devotion to her family, especially her sons, and her role as a supportive wife to Alex.
The three friends had known each other since their time at the University of South Carolina.
Price served as Murdaugh’s “big sister” in the Kappa Delta sorority and West living with Murdaugh after graduation.
Both were also bridesmaids in the Murdaughs’ wedding.
Despite the case’s attention, Maggie’s friends hope that she will be remembered for who she was and not just as “the wife that was murdered.”
They want people to know that she was a kind, strong, and supportive person who loved her family.
Meanwhile, Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences on March 3, and his lawyers filed a notice to appeal the conviction on March 9.
