An Upington man has been sentenced to 22 years direct imprisonment for the offenses of house robbery and rape.
The judgment was delivered at the Upington Regional Court on Monday, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The House Robbery and Rape Incident
The incident took place on January 24, 2021, in the early hours of the morning.
The accused, Floors Johannes Matthys, 35, broke into the house of a 59-year-old woman and stole cash he found.
During his search for more items to steal, he came across the victim who was taking a shower inside the house.
A Struggle and Violent Act
Upon encountering the victim, a struggle ensued between the two, resulting in injuries to the victim.
Unfortunately, the accused managed to overpower her and proceeded to rape her before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim traumatized.
Continuation of Criminal Activities
Following the incident, the victim reported the matter to the police, and a facial sketch of the accused was circulated.
However, the accused continued his criminal activities, breaking into other houses and victimizing additional individuals.
A photo of the accused was shared on social media, leading the rape victim to identify him as her attacker.
Furthermore, positive DNA results linked him to the crime.
Prosecutor’s Argument for Aggravated Sentence
During the sentencing proceedings, Prosecutor advocate Madeleen De Kock argued for an additional 5 years of imprisonment to be added to the minimum sentence.
This request was based on the severity of the rape charge, which carried a minimum sentence of 10 years at the time.
Conclusion: Justice Served
The sentencing of the accused to 22 years direct imprisonment reflects the gravity of his crimes and the significant impact they had on the victim’s life.
The court’s decision serves as a reminder of the severe consequences individuals will face for engaging in such violent and heinous acts.
