On the 63rd anniversary of Niger’s independence, US President Joe Biden issued a statement calling for the immediate release of Niger’s elected President Mohamed Bazoum and emphasized the need to preserve the country’s democracy.
He expressed the United States’ commitment to supporting civilian-led governance and the democratic values shared between the two nations.
However, the country has been burdened by four previous coups since gaining independence from France in 1960, making the preservation of democracy a crucial concern.
