In the west, there was an outpouring of mourning for Gorbachev, but not in Russia.
Gorbachev was esteemed in the west for bringing about the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Putin will not attend the funeral of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on Saturday because he is “too busy.”
His spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stated, “The farewell service and funeral will take place on September 3, but the president will be unable to attend due to his work schedule.”
Putin was seen on Russian state television placing a bunch of red roses next to Gorbachev’s open casket in the hospital where he passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91.
He observed a minute of quiet, lowered his head, and placed his hand briefly on the casket before making the sign of the cross.
Despite a massive outpouring of condolences from the West following Gorbachev’s death, the reaction in Russia was much more muted, as many despised him after he precipitated the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Although the dissolution of the Soviet Union resulted in the liberation of nations such as Ukraine, it left Russia in economic disarray and diminished its international prominence.

Putin described Gorbachev as a ‘politician and statesman who had a significant impact on the path of world history’ in a letter of condolences that was distributed by the Kremlin.
Putin continued, “He led our nation during a time of complex, dramatic changes, extensive foreign policy, and economic and social issues.”
The funeral ceremony for Gorbachev will be held on Saturday in the Moscow Hall of Columns.
It has been used historically for funerals of prominent figures, notably Joseph Stalin in 1953.
Gorbachev will then be interred alongside his wife Raisa, who passed away in 1999, at the Novedevichy cemetery in Moscow.

The Kremlin official stated that Gorbachev’s funeral will include ‘features of a state funeral,’ such as a guard of honour, and will be organized with governmental assistance.
Putin has spent the majority of his 20 years as president dismantling elements of Gorbachev’s legacy, characterizing the Soviet collapse as the greatest geopolitical disaster of the 20th century.
This includes cracking down on independent media and political opposition, which, according to opponents, has undone Gorbachev’s efforts to introduce ‘glasnost’ or political openness.
Putin has also sought to regain Russia’s dominance in Ukraine, one of the countries that gained independence from the Soviet Union, through a full-scale conflict.
