The Spanish thriller series “Wrong Side of the Tracks” made a hit on Netflix last year with its “old guy as neighbourhood vigilante” storyline and an excellent ensemble cast that made the show’s interconnected storylines engaging to watch. In the second season, everyone is back, and the storylines are even more significant and ambitious than in the first season.
The series revolves around Tirso Abantos (Jose Coronado), who retired from his hardware store in the Madrid neighbourhood of Entrevías but is still angry with the increase in drug activity.
Tirso also misses his granddaughter Irene (Nona Sobo), who moved back in with her mother after Tirso helped save her from the gangs after her.
In the second season, Tirso decides to take on all gangs in the neighbourhood and not just ensure Irene’s safety.
Meanwhile, Irene celebrates her 18th birthday and tells her mother she is pregnant with her boyfriend Nelson’s (Felipe Londoño) child.
However, Nelson is co-leading his old gang with Nata (María de Nati) and is battling a rival gang for control of the neighborhood.
The second season’s storyline feels more freeform than the first, with a broader scope and expanded stakes.
However, the show’s established ensemble cast keeps the story moving well, and the character’s motivations are clear.
Despite the sprawling storylines, “Wrong Side Of The Tracks” remains an engaging, pulpy ensemble thriller with an appealing combination of camp and violence.
