Sunday, January 15, 2023, police officers from the Western Cape apprehended three suspects after a car chase through the streets of Nyanga.
Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said that under Operation Restore, police officers were sent to investigate a suspicious car and its occupants.
Pojie said that the police had received information about a blue Golf making suspicious stops at cellphone outlets.
“Members in search of the car and its occupants and spotted the car driving along Intsikizi Street, Crossroads.”
He said that as the suspects spotted the police approaching, the driver of the car rushed away.
The police pursued the suspects along Intsikizi street and were able to stop them.
“They searched the vehicle and found a .45 revolver, loaded with six rounds.”
He said that the suspects lacked documentation of ownership for the revolver.
“Police arrested the suspects, aged between 32 and 35, and charged them with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The police also took the Volkswagen Golf and a small sum of cash.
Pojie said that the accused would shortly appear before the Athlone Magistrates’ Court.
Management of the provincial police thanked the members for their continuing dedication to ridding the streets of illegal weapons that harm residents.
In a separate instance, the Western Cape police got information that a weapon was held on Tony Yengeni Street, Cross Roads, in Nyanga.
Members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team responded to the tip and proceeded to the location, where they met a 64-year-old owner who was cooperative and allowed them to search his premises.
The members seized a Norinco 9mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition. He was detained and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
