The Federal Government has warned Russia to withdraw its soldiers from Ukraine and cease its attack against the country.
When he met with envoys from the G7 countries in Nigeria today, February 25, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, made the appeal on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Onyeama voiced concern over the Russian-Ukraine crisis and called for peace to end it.
He stated that Nigeria does not condone Russia’s aggressive posture and urged Russia to back off.
“Both parties must prioritize peace and dialogue.
“We support all efforts to halt the aggression and return Russian troops to Russia,” Onyeama stated.
Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting, German Ambassador to Nigeria, Birgitt Ory, who is also chair of the G7 Group, appreciated the African Union on its statement on the situation.
The German envoy who commended Nigeria for putting in its weight, said Nigeria is a very important voice that the world needed to hear.
Other envoys at the meeting include United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard; British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing; Head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi. Embassies of Japan and Canada sent in representatives.
