Pilgrims Experience Interfaith Exploration during World Youth Day in Lisbon

During the recent World Youth Day event in Lisbon, Portugal, an initiative known as “Spiritual Routes” provided pilgrims with the chance to engage in guided tours of diverse religious sites, including a Muslim mosque, Hindu temple, Jewish synagogue, and several Catholic churches.

A Glimpse into Hindu Beliefs and Interfaith Exchange

Among the activities, a one-hour tour of the Radha Krishna Temple on August 4 allowed participants to learn about Hindu religious symbols and beliefs.

The tour facilitated an open dialogue between the Hindu community leader guiding the tour and pilgrims, fostering an exchange of insights on both Hindu and Catholic perspectives.

Attendance Factors and Reactions

While the Radha Krishna Temple tour was conducted multiple times from August 2 to 4, only eight people participated on the final day. In contrast, the Central Mosque of Lisbon attracted around 200 pilgrims per day from August 1 to 4.

Factors such as location and advertising likely contributed to the varying attendance levels.

The Hindu temple’s distance from the city center and poor advertising might have influenced participation rates.

Interreligious Activities Highlighted by Church Leaders

The initiative aligns with the theme of interreligious dialogue and ecumenism emphasized by church leaders during World Youth Day.

Cardinal Manuel Clemente, the patriarch of Lisbon, highlighted the event’s broad interfaith and goodwill aspect in his opening Mass homily, emphasizing the diverse unity of the gathering.

Promoting Interfaith Dialogue and Understanding

Father Peter Stilwell, overseeing interreligious activities during the event, emphasized the value of interfaith dialogue in fostering awareness of various religious traditions.

He stressed that such dialogue does not detract from the event’s Catholic foundation but rather enriches it by encouraging mutual understanding.

Positive Feedback and a Call for Continued Engagement

Participants expressed positive feedback about the interreligious activities, with some suggesting the possibility of creating a World Youth Day-style event for young people from different faith traditions.

The program included diverse events, such as panel discussions with representatives from different religions, documentary screenings, and interactive games centered on dialogue.

Personal Transformations through Dialogue

Elena Dini, a Catholic participant in a panel discussion, shared her personal experience of how World Youth Day can catalyze transformations.

She recalled her encounter with a young Muslim woman and a Buddhist monk during the opening Mass, highlighting the moments that inspire growth in knowledge, sharing, faith, and the recognition of God’s presence in various dimensions of life.

The interfaith activities at World Youth Day in Lisbon emphasized the significance of interreligious dialogue in fostering mutual understanding and unity among participants from diverse religious backgrounds.
