In an interview with Men’s Health, Zac Efron addressed rumors of plastic surgery, explaining that alterations to his facial shape were due to a jaw injury and subsequent physical therapy.
In April 2021, Efron became popular after starring in an Earth Day special alongside scientist Bill Nye. People claimed that Zac Efron had received Botox, fillers, implants, or another cosmetic operation, as well as dental surgery, based on images from the event, which were called “Jaw-Gate.”
The actor told Men’s Health that he fractured his jaw while rushing through his house while wearing socks and colliding with a granite fountain. He stated that while he was undergoing physical therapy to heal, certain facial and jaw muscles had to work harder as a result of the injury.
It notably affected the masseters, which are placed on the side of the face from the cheekbone to the lower jaw and are responsible for chewing.
“The masseters simply expanded,” he added. They just grew enormously in size.
Before his mother asked him if he had plastic surgery, Efron said he was unaware of the web speculation regarding his looks. Since his 17-year-old “High School Musical” fame, he has avoided social media except when promoting specific projects, he told Men’s Health.
“If I cared about what others thought of me as much as they may believe I do, I would not be able to accomplish this work,” he stated.
