Broos Contemplates Quitting Bafana Bafana
Hugo Broos, who assumed the role of South Africa’s coach in May 2021, recently disclosed his inner struggles and contemplations about quitting the Bafana Bafana job. Despite guiding the national team close to the playoffs of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Broos faced intense criticism, primarily focusing on his squad selection.
Initial Setbacks and Contemplations
Following a 5-0 defeat by France in an international friendly and a 2-1 loss to Morocco in the AFCON qualifiers, Broos found himself at a crossroads. The coach admitted that, at that point, he seriously considered leaving his position, feeling overwhelmed by the negative sentiments and the perceived lack of direction in his efforts.
Choosing Perseverance
Amidst the challenging period, Broos, known for his winning mentality, made a conscious decision to persist. Even as his assistant coach Cedomir Janevski departed, Broos stood firm with Helman Mkhalele in the dugout. He believed in his ability to turn the situation around and leave a positive impact on South African football.
Turning Point: AFCON Qualification and Victory over Morocco
The tide began to turn in favor of Broos and Bafana Bafana when they secured qualification for the recent AFCON and defeated the World Cup semi-finalist Morocco. These achievements injected hope and belief into the team, sparking a positive trajectory in their performance.
Broos’ Reflections on Near-Quit Decision
Reflecting on his close call with quitting, Broos expressed, “I was close [to quitting Bafana]… Everything is negative, there is nothing good. But there was a voice who shouted louder, ‘No, go on, go on. Believe in what you believe in and it will happen’.” Despite the difficulties, Broos acknowledges the crucial role of belief, both from himself and the players, in achieving favorable outcomes.
Meetings and Inner Struggles
Broos further revealed that he went back to Morocco during this uncertain period and held meetings with his former assistant coach, Cedomir Janevski, discussing potential future projects. The coach’s inner struggle and the supportive voice that urged him to continue highlight the complex dynamics involved in managing a national team.
