Coach Ivanisevic Refutes Illness Allegations in Djokovic’s Australian Open Exit
Addressing the unexpected defeat of Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-final against Jannik Sinner, coach Goran Ivanisevic has dismissed speculations about the record Grand Slam champion’s health.
Djokovic, who suffered a shocking loss to the young Italian, was rumored to have been hampered by illness during the match.
Uncharacteristic Performance and Denial of Illness
Novak Djokovic’s uncharacteristic display in Melbourne, where he won only four games in the first two sets, fueled rumors of a possible illness.
However, Ivanisevic firmly denied reports of Djokovic being unwell and emphasized that the world No 1, despite admitting it was one of his worst Grand Slam matches, did not face health issues during the semi-final.
‘Sooner or Later, He Had to Lose’

Goran Ivanisevic acknowledged the disappointment of Djokovic’s defeat, stating, ‘Sooner or later he had to lose, we were all aware of that.’
Despite the setback, the coach expressed regret about the manner in which the loss occurred. Ivanisevic highlighted that facing Sinner, Djokovic needed to be at his best, and even at 100%, victory was not guaranteed.
Australian Open Struggles and Wrist Injury
Reflecting on Djokovic’s overall performance in the Australian Open, Ivanisevic noted that the tournament did not feel right for the Serbian from the first round onwards.
Djokovic had previously suffered a wrist injury during the United Cup in Perth, but Ivanisevic affirmed that there were no lingering health concerns and Djokovic was physically sound.
‘Nothing Bothered Him, Nole was Healthy’
Contrary to speculations, Ivanisevic clarified, ‘No, nothing bothered him, Nole was healthy.’

He emphasized that sometimes things just don’t work out, and Djokovic, being human, can face challenges.
Ivanisevic concluded by expressing his contentment that if Djokovic had to lose to someone, he’s glad it was Jannik Sinner.
End of an Unbeaten Streak
The defeat marked the end of Djokovic’s remarkable 33-match, six-year unbeaten run in the Australian Open.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner went on to clinch his first major title after a dramatic victory against Daniil Medvedev in the final.
