Former Ajax star Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in smuggling over 1,350 kilos of cocaine.
The charges stem from an incident in January 2020 when two batches of cocaine, totaling 1,363 kilograms, were intercepted in Antwerp.
Promes and a 32-year-old co-suspect were found guilty of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing the drugs.
The cocaine was reportedly hidden in a shipment of sea salt from Brazil, transported in two containers to Antwerp.
Promes Fails to Appear for Trial
Promes failed to appear for his trial and did not make a statement about the offenses charged against him.

Prosecutors expressed concerns about Promes’ behavior, suggesting that he felt “untouchable” and highlighting his failure to attend court dates.
They also questioned how a successful footballer like Promes could become so deeply involved in crime, suggesting that his wealth and status may have played a role.
Legal Troubles Continue for Promes
This is not the first legal issue for Promes, as he was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin at a family party in 2020.
The incident occurred after an argument over a stolen necklace.
Despite these legal troubles, Promes has had a successful football career, playing for clubs like Twente, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, and Ajax, as well as representing the Dutch national team.

Prosecutors Highlight Promes’ Role in Cocaine Trade
The case against Promes began after the police received information linking him to the cocaine trade.
Eavesdropping equipment was placed in his car, and he was observed by authorities.
Chat messages revealed his involvement in bringing in, removing, transporting, and selling the cocaine.
Prosecutors argued that Promes “normalizes and almost romanticizes the cocaine trade” and that his wealth allowed him to invest in criminal activities.
